Lately, more folks are considering running Kubernetes directly on physical servers, and for good reasons: Broadcom's licensing changes have organizations questioning their longtime datacenter foundations, GPU workloads demand direct access to their expensive cards and if Kubernetes is already orchestrating your workloads, why run it on top of yet another orchestrator? But running Kube directly on the metal introduces some new problems: How do we provision and patch servers in a world without cloud images - pxeboot, anyone? Can I repurpose my virtualization hosts or do I need a different server profile? Where do my control planes live and how do I carve up these beefy servers into workers? And in the end, what's it actually going to cost me? In this session, we share the lessons learnt from running Kubernetes on physical infrastructure over the last two years.
