Cloud native has always been about more than technology. Each wave of innovation has paired technical progress with shifts in how organisations deliver value, yet these movements often collapse into tool-focused quick fixes and wrongly placed optimisations. With the rise of AI, platform engineering sits at a crossroads: it could become another hype cycle, or offer a way out of today’s fragmented, unsustainable reality. This keynote reframes platform engineering as the mandatory abstraction that exposes organisational patterns, improves interoperability, and guides architectural decisions for lasting value and saves teams from AI enhanced shadow IT. Achieving this requires applying the same discipline that shaped cloud-native applications to platforms themselves. Just as the twelve-factor app defined a model for resilient software, platform teams need similar clarity in defining capabilities and preserving boundaries.
